Do you ever wonder if your children are addicted to screen time? Do they cry when it is time to put their tablets, I-Pads, and other electronics away? Is all of this technology even good for your children? The American Academy of Pediatrics is a good place to find recommendations for your child’s use of screen media. (1) It is suggested to avoid digital media (television, computer games, videos, or DVDs) for children under the age of 18 months. Video chatting is the exception. (2) After the age of 18 to 24 months, it is suggested that parents watch digital media with their children and talk about it. (3) For children, ages 2 to 5, it is suggested that parents watch high-quality programming with their children to help with learning of what they are viewing. Limit screen time to 1 hour a day. Media can enhance daily life if used appropriately. When used inappropriately, media can take the place of other important activities (face-to-face interaction, family-time, playing outside, exercise, downtime and sleep).
