Babies learn language best by having someone talk to them face to face. As they get older and become toddlers they will begin to say single words and then imitate the phrases that they hear you say. You can help them with language by adding another word when they say single words. For example when your child says "more", you could respond "more juice". You are labeling for the child what they are want. Preschoolers will begin to ask you lots of questions. They are learning words that they hear in a story and also learning to predict what will happen next. As you talk and read to your child you will help both their receptive and expressive vocabulary increase.
Providing a language rich environment for your child that includes talking, singing and reading to them is the best way to ensure healthy age-appropriate development.
